The most enjoyable way to boost your mood in the morning- AT FIRST LIGHT review
When I hear the words “Dance Party” I automatically think of dark sweaty night clubs packed with people and lots of alcohol. Feeling healthy and energised afterwards are probably the last things that come to mind, well that was until last Saturday. I had read of morning raves before and have always been intrigued so when I stumbled across AT FIRST LIGHT that I was keen to give it a go.
What is AT FIRST LIGHT? Essentially it is Adelaide's first healthy outdoor pre-work morning dance party! AT FIRST LIGHT aims to change up your morning routine for the better. Leah Kertesz, AT FIRST LIGHT founder, said the idea came to her whilst living in New York when a friend encouraged her to attend a morning dance party held in a club in an Industrial estate. She recalls the bars being fitted with healthy juices instead of alcohol and an overall fun and healthy vibe going on. Leah was inspired to replicate this back home but place it in a more Australian context, hence taking it outdoors.
I discussed it with quite a few people and mentioned going however the most common response was “that’s not really my thing” or “that is too early”. However I was determined to go, even if it was by myself! I was a little nervous and not sure what to expect, so in my typical punctual nature I over-calculated the time to get there thinking about traffic, finding a car park and everything in between. Being a Saturday morning in Adelaide, of course none of this was an issue and I got there 30 minutes early. But nevertheless I was there and there was no backing out at that stage. I found a nice place on the grass and put down my yoga mat ready for a morning of fun. As it got closer to 8am many more people turned up, some looking excited, some half asleep.
The morning kicked off with Leah saying a few words, then yoga, with the DJ pumping out some chilled out tunes. As the crowd began to slowly stretch and wake up the music became a bit more upbeat and the yoga progressed into dancing. At this point some people opted out and made their way to the coffee and breakfast carts (which were included in your ticket btw), while others got ready for a morning of dancing. That is the great thing about At first Light though, there is no mandatory part of the morning. You don’t feel forced to be there the whole time, or awkward if you get up to leave the group midway through. Leah revealed she did this intentionally to help people have more fun and feel more comfortable. She mentioned she wanted an event that felt more like a dance party than a structured class where people can feel free to be themselves and just have fun, beginning the day feeling refreshed. For this reason she incorporated other elements into the morning such as yoga, hula hoops, stationary bikes and inflatable balls. Her aim is “to celebrate all forms of movement and freedom”.
Overall the morning left me in such high spirits, which was quite unexpected. I personally had a great time and would encourage others to give it a go, even if you are hesitant. Follow the great advice given to Leah before she attended her first dance party in New York, and great advice for life in general … “Just say yes!”
